A powerful and deadly sorcerer and a major villain in the Mortal Kombat series, Shang Tsung is a demonic being who must consume souls to sustain his health and life. In the Mortal Kombat series, he is the epitome of cunning and decadence, symbolized by his preference for lavish parties, magnificent palaces, and elegant clothing. Unlike the crude Shao Kahn, this bombast is a facade, disguising Tsung's true intellectual and mental sophistication. His nemesis is Liu Kang, but throughout his life, he has earned the hatred of many people. A clear example of this is the case of Shujinko, who all his life dreamed of facing and defeating him in Mortal Kombat. Only Quan Chi can match his sorcerous skills. In the events narrated in the story of Mortal Kombat 1, it is revealed that there are two Shang Tsungs, one of them being the one from the timeline created by Liu Kang who turned out to be a small-time con man who later learned his black magic abilities thanks to the intervention of a mysterious woman named Damashi and the other Shang Tsung who turns out to be the true character who is revealed to have survived his encounter with Liu Kang for the Hourglass in his own timeline becoming a Titan and manipulating all the events of the game's story in secret.
