Waves Renaissance Compressor is an incredibly simple yet powerful bus compressor which recently got a facelift. Waves admit themselves that this is a no-frills plug-in yet it’s very capable as a gentle and transparent sounding bus compressor. To set this up as a bus compressor you’ll want a to set a low-value ratio. Ratios defining how much compression will take place as the signal approaches or reaches the threshold.
Slow attack times are routine in bus compression as they let the transients through the dynamics processing so that the mix can breathe for easily. Fairly quick release times are also typical for letting the attenuation return when the energy falls back below the threshold. Thresholds should be set gingerly to knock off 1 to 2dB. Any more than that and your mix may suffer pumping effects which is quite the opposite to what engineers refer to as glue.
We can choose between some compressor behaviours at the bottom of RComp. I recommend the smooth setting for bus compression as this mode doesn’t add any harmonic emphasis such as the warm mode. Smooth keeps the sound as close to the original as possible.
