On January 3rd, 2026, we ventured up north to the Marceline Sub of the BNSF Transcon mainline across northern Missouri. To start off the New Year of railfanning, 15 total trains were seen, most of which are featured in this video. From Ethel, MO to Hurdland, MO, and multiple other locations in between, the day was spent with speedy and pretty busy rail action.
Also featured are spots in and around the well-known small town of La Plata, MO. La Plata is home to multiple Virtual Railfan online live cameras, that large numbers of people view daily to see the busy action on this former Santa Fe doubletrack mainline. It is also home to the only scheduled Amtrak stop between Ft. Madison, IA, and KCMO for the Southwest Chief.
