June 2024 Steam Up at the Nevada County Narrow Gauge!

Описание: June 9, 2024 found two historic locomotives under steam in Nevada City, California! Nevada County Narrow Gauge #5, "Tahoe" is a 149-year old Baldwin 2-6-0 and the museum's pride and joy. The other engine, Antelope and Western #1, is a 135-year old Porter 0-4-0 and is privately owned by the Wilmunder family.

In this video, we watch the volunteer crew at work as the steam builds in the engines boilers. There is plenty of preparation as bolts are tightened, moving parts lubricated, fires stoked, tenders filled and inspections are performed. Once enough pressure is built up, #1 heads for the meadow loop, grabs the "Hercules" excursion car and the event begins! #5 was supposed to haul the brand new, scratch-built Lake Tahoe excursion car #56, but air compressor issues prevented this from happening. However this did not interfere with its operation, and #5 took paying guests on cab rides through the meadow. Both railbuses #9 and #97 made trips between the museum and the new railbus platform at the bottom of the steep grade.

There was some additional excitement as gunshots echoed through the air. It turns out that train robbers had heard that money was being carried behind #1, and decided to investigate for themselves!

At the end of the day, #5 and #1 returned to the museum yard separately up the steep hill. The custom built tender behind the Porter had to be drained of all water in order to keep the weight down so the engine could make it up. You'll enjoy the show both engines put on as they conquer the grade, which reaches up to 7-8%.
