මනමේ නාට්‍යය (Maname Drama) - මහාචාර්ය එදිරිවීර සරච්චන්ද්‍ර (Professor Ediriweera Sarathchandra)

සිංහල නාට්‍ය කලාව තුළ එදා මෙදා තුර බිහි වු අති විශිෂ්ට නාට්‍ය නිර්මාණයක් වන ‘මනමේ’ පළමු වරට රඟ දැක්වූයේ 1956 නොවැම්බර් 03 වැනිදා කොළඹ ලයනල් වෙන්ඩ්ට් රඟහලේ දීය. එය විශේෂයෙන්ම සාම්ප්‍රදායික නාඩගම් නාට්‍ය කලාවේ ආභාසය සහිතව නිර්මාණය වීම පිළිබඳව පැසසුමට ලක් කෙරේ. මනමේ (Maname) නාට්‍යයට මූලාශ්‍ර වී ඇත්තේ පන්සිය පනස් ජාතක පොතෙහි 372 වෙනි ජාතක කතාව ලෙස දැක්වෙන චුල්ල ධනුද්ධර ජාතකයයි. මනමේ කුමාරයාත්, වැදි රජුටත් මැදි වූ මනමේ කුමරිය හරහා සරච්චන්ද්‍රයන් ස්ත්‍රීය පිළිබඳව හෙළනා මානවාදී දෘෂ්ටිය ප්‍රේක්ෂකයාට අදටද වටහාගත නොහැකිය.

මහැදුරු සරච්චන්ද්‍රයන් සිය වසර ගණනාවක අධ්‍යයන, පර්යේෂණ හා ගවේෂණ ඔස්සේ අනාවරණය කරගත් ශාස්ත්‍රීය තොරතුරු අනුසාරයන් ජීවමාන නිෂ්පාදනයක් ලෙස නිර්මාණය කරන ‘මනමේ’ සම්භාව්‍ය ගණයේ උසස් දෘශ්‍ය කාව්‍ය කෘතියක් ලෙස හුවා දැක්විය හැකිය. සරච්චන්ද්‍රයන් ශාස්ත්‍රඥයෙක් ලෙස මෙරට ජන විඥානය හඳුනාගෙන නිර්මාණය කළ මනමේ නාට්‍යය (Maname Drama) ශ්‍රී ලාංකේය ජන චිත්ත සන්තානයේ සදාකල් ලැඟුම් ගත් අපේ උරුමයකි. වර්තමාන හා අනාගත පරම්පරාවට විනෝදාස්වාදය පමණක් නොව බුද්ධි කලම්බනයද සිදු කරන මනමේ නාට්‍ය වසරින් වසර වයසින් මුහුකුරා ගියද තවත් චිරාත්කාලයක් මෙරට කලා ලෝකයත්, සහෘද සිත සතන් රසවින්ඳයෙන්, තර්කනයෙන් හා චින්තනයෙන් පෝෂණය කරනු ඇති.

Ediriweera Sarachchandra’s Maname considered the first modern drama in Sri Lanka, is based on local traditions such as ‘Naadagam’ and ‘Kolam’, inspired by Chinese operas, Japanese Kabuki, and Indian folk dramas.

The story of Maname found in folk plays is as follows. The son of the King of Benares proceeds to Thaksala the great centre of learning and acquires the liberal arts. Being proficient in archery he is given the title of Danuddhara. The Master of Thaksala greatly pleased with his pupil gives him his daughter in marriage. The Prince sets out with his consort to go back to Benares. On the way, they encounter forest dwellers who make an attempt to capture them. The Prince overcomes them and finally engages in hand-to-hand combat with the forest chief (Vedda King) after giving the sword to his wife. The Prince overpowers the forest chief and while sitting on his chest bids his wife to give him the sword so that he could cut off the forest chief’s head.

In the meantime, she has conceived a passion for the forest chief and places the hilt of the sword in the forest chief’s hand and the sheath in her husband’s. The Vedda King kills the Prince and takes the woman with him. As they journey together she confesses her love. The forester begins to fear that if she kills her husband for his sake, she will probably treat him in the same manner when she meets another man. So, he decides to get rid of her. On the way, they have to cross a stream. The forester (Vedda King) tells the woman that he will first wade across with her ornaments and come for her after leaving them in a safe place. After wading across he abandons her. The woman dies of grief and repentance in the forest.
