Hockney was working on the first of two 6-panel summer paintings of Woldgate Woods. Mostly he was painting directly on the spot sur le motif: here he is drawing in felt-tip pen on a photograph of the unfinished painting, to then translate these observations of the scene into paint back in the studio, an ingenious solution, to avoid some of the heavy lifting.
