Felix Mendelssohn composed his Piano Sextet in D Major, Op. 110, in 1824, at the age of 15. Scored for piano, violin, two violas, cello, and double bass, the work reflects Mendelssohn’s precocious mastery of chamber textures and his fondness for the piano’s virtuosic role. It was written during a fertile period that also saw the creation of his Viola Sonata and Piano Quartet No. 3, and just a year before his celebrated Octet, Op. 20. Despite its early brilliance, the Sextet remained unpublished during Mendelssohn’s lifetime and only appeared in 1868 as part of a posthumous edition — hence its misleadingly high opus number. The manuscript, housed in the Berlin State Library, is remarkably clean, suggesting a confident and swift compositional process.
