A few weeks ago, we talked about the most haunting songs from female vocalists. And it got me going down a rabbit hole of the most unique female voices of the last few decades. So today, we’re diving into some of the most distinctive female voices of the last 50 years… These are voices that cut through the noise, across those decades and genres. From whispering mystics to powerhouse belters, I’m going to give you my top 10. Let’s do it.

So, starting off the countdown at #10, I’m going with the Canadian firebrand Alanis Morissette. In 1995, Alanis’s Jagged Little Pill hit the airwaves like a Molotov cocktail. It was one of the biggest-selling albums of the 90s, checking in with 33 million copies sold. At only the age of 21, Alanis unleashed a torrent of rage and heartbreak. Her voice cut through the day’s formulaic pop like a serrated blade. “Ironically,” before Jagged Little Pill, Alanis was a teen pop star in Canada. And she was churning out dance tracks like a pop princess. Her singles “Too Hot” and “No Apologies” both reached #14 on the Canadian RPM Chart. But beneath the bubblegum beats, Alanis craved authenticity. Moving to Los Angeles, she teamed with producer Glen Ballard to strip away the varnish and craft an alt-rock confessional. Jagged Little Pill’s raw storytelling resonated worldwide. And here in America, the album topped Billboard’s albums chart for 12 weeks, and earned her four Grammys… including Album of the Year.

As Alanis told Rolling Stone in ‘95, “[She] was done hiding who [she] was.” Morissette’s unfiltered honesty turned her into a voice for Gen-X’s angst and disillusion. The LP’s lead single You Oughta Know reached #6 on the Hot 100, and it's my pick as the showcase of her voice. The song is pure breakup fury. Incidentally, it’s rumored that it targets Alanis’s former boyfriend, Dave Coulier (of Full House fame). She has never publicly confirmed this, but Dave has said that the lyrics and the timing fit. It was definitely the first huge hit to hint at movie theater sexcapades and an F bomb had to be bleeped out. No female singer had ever out-Madonnaed Madonna. Following You Oughta Know, Alanis Morissette released five more “Jagged” singles, including US Top 10s You Learn and Ironic. But what really set Alanis’s voice apart was its versatility. She wrestled with her lyrics, stretching out syllables like taffy and then spit them out
