I'm working through Moby-Dick for the first time, and I've been enjoying it far more than I expected to! In my (non-expert) opinion, this first paragraph is one of the finest in all of literature.
If you'd like to read Moby-Dick (which you should), keep in mind that it's in the public domain and can be read for free here: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2701
As Moby-Dick was originally published in English, most unabridged editions are solid. As long as your edition contains the etymologies and extracts at the beginning, you're in the clear!
This video was fairly off-the-cuff, and most of what I had to say was riffing off a series of handwritten notes I took. I cut a brief discussion on all of the sibilance used in this first paragraph (repeated use of an 's' sound) because I mistakenly called it assonance (repeated vowel sound usage). I also felt like I slightly over-simplified the life story of the Biblical Ishmael, I need to dive back in to the book of Genesis. Bear in mind that I'm not a scholar, so small mistakes and oversimplifications will be a natural side-effect. Any corrections or pieces of additional insight are appreciated, and I encourage you to leave them in the comments (provided they are kind, of course).
Huge thanks to my sister Hannah for designing this video's thumbnails and for choosing the fonts of all on-screen text. Like myself, she has no social media.
Thanks as well to Benjamin McEvoy, who's back catalogue Patreon lectures on Moby-Dick have been quite instructive; as well as Carolynmarie reads, Emmie, and the Game of Tomes book club, where we're currently reading Moby-Dick. The discussions there have been great! Link to the book club here: https://fable.co/club/game-of-tomes-w...
