🔬 3 Clinical Stages of Dengue Fever
1️⃣ Febrile Phase (2–7 days)
• Sudden high fever
• Headache, retro-orbital pain
• Muscle & joint pain
• Nausea, vomiting, rash
• Virus present in blood (viremia)
👉 Management:
• Paracetamol only
• Avoid aspirin & ibuprofen
• Adequate hydration
2️⃣ Critical Phase (24–48 hours) ⚠️
• Occurs when fever subsides
• Most dangerous stage
What happens:
• Plasma leakage from blood vessels
• Low platelets (thrombocytopenia)
• High hematocrit
• Fluid in chest (pleural effusion) & abdomen (ascites)
• Risk of shock & organ failure
👉 Requires urgent medical care
3️⃣ Recovery Phase (48–72 hours)
• Patient improves
• Appetite returns
• Increased urine output
• Fluids reabsorbed into bloodstream
• Characteristic itchy rash:
“Isles of white in a sea of red”
