This song has taken a journey to far and wide places. I get e-mails every so often from people all over the world who are singing it, so I thought I better put a version of the songs in its original form!
I wrote it in 2014 in the eve of the winter solstice. I was asked to lead a song the next day for the Riekes Center nature program and so researched "Wendell Berry solstice poem" and this poem came up. I sat with the poem in hand, and a melody came right away.

TO KNOW THE DARK
To go in the dark with a light is to know the light.
To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight,
and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings,
and is traveled by dark feet and dark wings.
