Mommy Peanut’s Babesia and Pyometra Journey
✨ Late August
About two weeks after her mating, we noticed changes in Mommy Peanut. She was sleeping more than usual (normally, she loved hanging out in the garage). Soon after, she started losing her appetite—barely eating, even when we offered her favorite chicken and wet food.
She also didn’t poop for almost two days, so we tried feeding her squash, carrots, wet food, and chicken, but again she ate very little. When she finally pooped, it was watery. We gave her water with salt and sugar while waiting for her dextrose powder, and she seemed okay for a day.
But the following night, she stopped eating again—only peeing, no poop.
✨ Emergency Scare
After my shift at 4 AM, I couldn’t find her in her usual spots. I saw her near my parents’ room, shaking and struggling to breathe. I massaged her chest and tummy, and after a few minutes, her breathing normalized, but she was still shaking. That was the moment we rushed her to a 24-hour vet clinic.
✨ At the Clinic
The vets ran tests—CBC, blood chem, temperature check, and a blood parasite test kit. Her CBC results were surprisingly good—everything looked normal. But the blood parasite test kit came back positive for Babesia. The vet then recommended an ultrasound and X-ray to check for possible pyometra.
We waited until our regular clinic opened for imaging, and the results confirmed pyometra. We then returned to the first clinic to get her prescriptions and meds. She was instructed to come back after a week for an injection, and the following week for a check-up.
✨ Signs of Hope
After starting her meds, she showed improvement. We thought she was getting better, so I decided to wait until my salary came in before considering surgery. At the same time, I also had to manage my house payment and the expenses for the unit turnover. I knew my family would help me if I asked, but I didn’t want to be a burden. Despite the struggle, Peanut’s health remained my top priority.
✨ September 28 – Emergency Surgery
A week after payday, we brought her back to the clinic. After the vet’s checkup, we were told it was already an emergency—her WBC count was dangerously high.
Thankfully, since she was stable in other aspects, she could undergo surgery right away.
We signed the waiver for her pyometra spay, and she was confined for a few hours before the operation. By 9 AM the next morning, we were able to bring her home after a successful surgery.
✨ Recovery
Now, Mommy Peanut is recovering beautifully. She’s on time with her meds, her wound is cleaned as scheduled, and she’s eating a lot—mostly recovery food, squash, and some rice. Despite the stitches on her tummy, she’s still our pretty girl. 💖
Forever grateful for the support of my family and BF. 🙏
