The Edrick Faust case is a tragic cold case finally hitting trial today—Day 1 with opening statements in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia.

On January 19, 2001, 23-year-old UGA law student Tara Louise Baker was found dead in her burned apartment. She'd been brutally beaten, stabbed, sexually assaulted (including rape and aggravated sodomy), and the fire was set to cover it up.


Renewed attention came from podcaster Cameron Jay's “Classic City Crime” series (June 2020–January 2021). In April 2023, Georgia passed the Coleman-Baker Act (named partly after Tara), allocating over $5 million to reopen cold cases via a GBI Cold Case Unit.

In May 2024, the GBI unit, partnering with Athens-Clarke County Police, used new DNA tech and biological evidence to arrest Edrick Lamont Faust (then 50). He's facing 12 felony counts: malice murder, multiple felony murder counts, burglary, aggravated sodomy (multiple), rape, aggravated assault, first-degree arson, and possession of a knife during a felony. Faust has a prior criminal history (he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault less than a month after Baker's killing).


Defense attorney: Ahmad R. Crews (Atlanta).
Prosecution: Kris Bolden, assistant district attorney in Athens-Clarke County, delivered opening statements.

Jury (8 men, 4 women) was seated last week; trial expected to run ~1 week, ending around Feb. 6.
