The rare South Georgia pipit has returned to nest on the remote island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic. With support from Lindblad Expeditions, the South Georgia Heritage Trust successfully conducted a habitat restoration project that eradicated millions of harmful rodents from the island. The most southerly songbird nested in 2015 for the first time in living memory after decades of its eggs and young being eaten by rats introduced to the island by seafarers over the centuries.
In 2018, we mark the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the most powerful and important bird-protection law ever passed. In honor of this milestone, we unite with National Geographic and nature lovers around the world to join forces to celebrate the “Year of the Bird” and commit to protecting birds today and for the next hundred years.
