Challenge: In power semiconductors, new devices and materials, such as SiC MOSFETs, replaced silicon switches in low-power applications a long time ago due to their excellent properties; however, it took time to make the transition to medium-power (~100kW) converters, until the technology and design procedures allowed it.
In power magnetics, ferrites have been used in low power converters for a very long time but, are only now starting to be used as a common approach for these medium-power needs. The technology is already here, but the design process is still very hard due to the enormous amounts of design variables when selecting an inductor or transformer, opposed to the relative easiness of selecting off-the-self switches.
