Founded in 1339, Tenryū-ji is not just a religious site but also one of Kyoto’s most prestigious atmospheric, cultural refinement of Japanese medieval Buddhist Zen temples. Quiet, calm, spacious, and contemplative, temple’s greatest treasure is the zen garden Sōgenchi which was designed by one of Japan’s most influential Zen monk-garden designers.
Located in Arashiyama, right next to the famous bamboo grove, the Garden is home to one of Japan’s oldest surviving Zen gardens. And remarkably, the garden layout remains almost unchanged since 14th century (when it was originally designed)
