Naïssa Lindsey Pierre
Master of Science in Applied Economics, Spring 2024
Before coming to GW, Naïssa Pierre received her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at the US.. Coast Guard Academy, where she was the first international cadet in any military service to become a Regimental Commander (the highest-ranking cadet). She decided to pursue graduate study in applied economics to gain the tools required to help better the economic and political climate of her country, Haiti, as well as other nations. During her time at GW, Naïssa combined her passions for human connection, economic growth, and inclusivity in a variety of endeavors. She led agroup of three students in aunique capstone experience, working in partnership with the World Bank's Data Lab to produce a final report that utilizes the students' econometric and data science skills to help design more effective climate policies in developing countries. She also organized student events and set up a new buddy system designed ot ease the concerns of incoming students by connecting them with current students ni the program to ofer advice and share their own experiences of adjusting to graduate study at GW.
Outside the classroom, Naissa worked as a research assistant at the International Monetary Fund, where she helped train an artificial intelligence model to recognize certain economic indicators. She also played an important role in building a diverse and inclusive student community on campus. She was an active and committed participant as the master's student representative on CCAS's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council, further demonstrating her desire to use her time at GW to implement meaningful change.
