Several chocolate companies rely on child labor, trafficking, and slavery in West African countries like Ivory Coast and Ghana to make those delicious chocolates that you see in the supermarket. In June this year, a U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Nestlé and Cargill could not be held responsible for child labor in the cocoa industry. But this decision was based on more than just the facts. Rather, it was based on a technical interpretation of law. In this video, I talk about the realities of the cocoa industry and the accountability of the Big Chocolate companies for perpetuating slave trade in these West African Countries.
