Polkas: Paddy Cronin's (c. Paddy Cronin) / Lonesome Polka.
Anton Zille (fiddle), Dmytro Yefimenko (bouzouki).
Göynük / Kemer / Antalya, Türkiye, March 2023.
I hope everyone is having a blast at Willie Week! Here’s a couple of tunes I recorded with our Ukrainian friend Dmytro as a way of saying “hi” to you all from our neck of the woods. Dmytro became an integral part of the Antalya session, which was made up entirely of Russian-speakers (save for an occasional visit from one local Clareman). I hope he keeps safe wherever he now chooses to be!
The first polka comes from Kerry’s own fiddler Paddy Cronin, and is said to have been composed by the man himself! I learned it from Tadhg Buckley and then paired with the Lonesome polka after hearing that lovely set on Where the Bog Is by Bryan O’Leary and Colm Guilfoyle.
The Lonesome polka, also known as the Lisheen or Din Tarrant’s is a slightly better-known tune, often heard in a set with another “Lonesome” polka which many know by the name of Jimmy Doyle’s. These two were recorded together by Jackie Daly and Seamus Creagh, Caoimhe and Éimhear Flannery, and the one we play is also part of a beautiful polka set on Emma O’Leary’s album – this should get you started!
Speaking of our Turkish tunes, the session ran in a very welcoming James Joyce’s pub (Antalya) every other Sunday until it became too hot to go out during the day! We might gather ‘round to play more tunes there yet, so do contact me if you happen to be in the area.
