🎨 ABOUT THIS LESSON:
In this live broadcast, we will be tackling a beautiful new subject in acrylics. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, you will learn techniques for color mixing, brushwork, and composition.
Key points that stand out
Using Daniel Smith gold gesso and multiple metallic paints to build a rich, glowing abstract background before adding the tree.
Working with smudgy brushes in circular motions to softly layer bronzes, golds, oranges, and glazes for depth without losing the metallic shine.
Designing a strong tree silhouette on a 10×20 gallery‑wrap canvas, including flowing roots and branch placement that leaves “air holes” for birds to fly through.
Mixing burnt umber, black, magenta, and warm grays to model the trunk and branches without over‑detailing, so the blossoms remain the star.
Blocking in blossom “shadow masses” first with gray‑violet metallics, then building opaque textured blossoms with lightweight molding paste plus titanium white.
Forming each blossom as a simple four‑petal shape with a small smudgy brush, varying size and thickness for an impressionistic, sculpted look.
Adding teal accents (phthalo blue + phthalo green + white) in the lower area and between blossoms for color contrast against the warm golds.
Dropping in cad yellow “centers” while the paste is still soft, and then editing: removing or softening centers and petals to keep good spacing and breathing room.
Practical tips: premixing molding paste and storing extras, why not to use matte medium (it dulls metallics), why gels stay more transparent, and how to scale this design to very large canvases.
