COSMIC BABY (BABY SPACE) – Curatorial Statement
In this work, Morten Klementsen fuses the most fragile symbol we know – a newborn child – with the vast, indifferent architecture of the universe. The baby, wrapped in soft fabric and haloed by gentle light, wears oversized glasses that reflect swirling galaxies and distant stars. The result is a portrait that feels both intimate and cosmic.
The lighting is cinematic: deep violets and midnight blues dissolve into electric bursts of orange and white, sculpting the child’s face with almost sculptural precision. The reflective lenses function as portals, turning the baby into a cosmic observer – or perhaps the universe itself, quietly looking back at us.
Formally, the work balances hyperrealism with stylized exaggeration. The head and glasses are slightly oversized, tipping the image into the realm of surrealism while remaining emotionally believable. Textures are carefully handled: the soft folds of the blanket, the smooth skin, and the hazy nebula around the figure all contribute to a tactile, immersive atmosphere.
Conceptually, COSMIC BABY suggests that every human being is born with infinite potential – a universe of possibilities held behind curious eyes. It also hints at a generation born into screens and simulations, whose first impressions of the world may already be filtered through technology and image.
Funny, tender and slightly uncanny, this piece stands at the intersection of sci-fi, portraiture and visual poetry. It invites us to ask a simple but enormous question: what if the smallest among us already carries the cosmos inside?
