This episode of Michigan Moments looks back at Escanaba, Michigan during the years 1890 to 1940, when iron ore, lumber, railroads, and commercial fishing shaped daily life along Little Bay de Noc. Using rare historical photographs, the video traces how Escanaba grew into one of the most important iron ore shipping ports on the Great Lakes.
Viewers will see the rise of massive wooden ore docks, including the dramatic 1909 collapse of Ore Dock No. 5, and how the town rebuilt and continued shipping iron to steel mills across the Midwest. The story also follows Escanaba’s lumber era, its busy rail yards, and the growth of Ludington Street as a commercial and social center anchored by the House of Ludington Hotel.
The episode also highlights commercial fishing on Lake Michigan and the arrival of spring smelt runs in the 1930s, when families gathered at the shoreline with nets and lanterns. It closes with the opening of the William Bonifas Auditorium in 1938, a lasting sign of community investment during the Great Depression.
Together, these images and stories show how Escanaba became a working city shaped by industry, water, and people who stayed.
