Advocate Angela Mulwa, daughter of presidential aspirant Rose Mbithe, told the court that her family had been subjected to what she described as a "systemic police reign of terror and intimidation" during the arrest of her mother and brother. Addressing the court, Mulwa alleged that about 20 to 25 plain-clothes officers wearing masks stormed their Karen home late at night, refused to identify themselves, physically assaulted family members and prevented them from following the suspects after they were taken away. She further claimed the officers misled the family about where the two had been detained, continued occupying the family compound in civilian vehicles and attempted to conduct searches without the presence of the suspects or their lawyers.
Mulwa also alleged that police tried to compel her brother to sign a statement indicating he had no injuries despite his refusal, while she displayed bruises she said she sustained while trying to protect her family during the arrest. She urged the court not to accept the prosecution's argument that police custody would guarantee the respondents' safety, arguing that the conduct she described demonstrated the opposite.
