The NDC’s decision to allow Baba Jamal to contest in the Ayawaso East Primary has sparked intense debate, with critics insisting he has not been fully cleared but merely permitted to participate while investigations continue.
Speaking on the issue, Berekum West MP Dickson Kyere-Duah dismissed claims of exoneration, arguing that monetisation of Ghana’s politics predates the current controversy and should not be selectively applied. Consumer Protection Agency CEO Kofi Kapito questioned the reliance on technicalities, warning that when ethical standards are ignored, public trust suffers.
Political Scientist Dr Kwame Asah-Asante described the outcome as unsurprising, blaming Ghana’s deep-rooted “moneyocracy” and a political culture that benefits from it. He suggested the NDC’s actions were more about optics than accountability. On the other hand, Dr Ekua Amoakoh, Deputy Spokesperson for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, challenged the basis of the probe, arguing that providing transportation for delegates does not amount to inducement.
As the by-election approaches, the controversy raises broader questions about internal party discipline, ethics in Ghanaian politics, and whether political parties are truly ready to confront vote-buying and influence peddling head-on.
