Neal Page (Steve Martin) is an uptight advertising executive desperately trying to fly home to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with his family. But when his flight is rerouted, he finds himself stranded — and stuck traveling with Del Griffith (John Candy), a good‑hearted but annoyingly talkative shower curtain–ring salesman. What begins as a miserable journey of cross‑country misadventures (by plane, train, bus, and rental car) becomes an unexpected bond between two very different men.
