Описание: On the basis of the free electron theory,Pauli explained the temperature-independent paramagnetism of metals. Considering the Sommerfeld model of metals at absolute zero, electrons may be divided into two equal groups, one with spin up and the other with spin down in the absence of any external magnetic field. In the presence of en external magnetic field, the spin down electrons increase their energy relative to the spin up electrons. This situation is not stable because when two bodies having different Fermi level are joined together the electrons will flow from the higher to the lower Fermi level until the Fermi levels become equal. There is now an excess of electrons with up spin giving a net magnetic moment.
