Galda Gisi is an essential kitchen ingredient in Garo homes. It is used in a variety of ways to make dishes and usually is used to give the sour taste to the food. Roselle leaves unlike the fruit is not nutrient dense but is very high in fiber and hence is very good for the digestive system.
Roselle leaves are one of the most commonly used food ingredient in whole of India, the plant grows easily and is plentiful and cheap. The roselle leaves can be eaten raw in salads or cooked as green leafy vegetable on its own or as in northeastern India can be cooked with fish and meat.
It is valued a lot by many traditional tribal communities. In my village almost every farm has a dedicated space for this wonderful plant.
