Stone Outdoor Kitchen Build in Pictures | DIY Pizza Oven & Grill

The idea of building a clay pizza oven first came to my mind about five years ago, but for a long time I didn’t know how or where to start. In 2023, I decided to gain some hands-on experience by building a natural stone wall, mainly to learn basic stone-laying techniques.

In the autumn of 2024, I finally decided to begin this project. I chose the location and started by building a simple roofed shelter. The structure consists of two posts set into the ground with a roof on top. The underground parts of the posts were charred and treated with tar for protection.

In spring 2025, I began building the pizza oven itself. I poured a 1.2 x 1.2 meter concrete slab as the base and built a supporting form from silicate bricks. Around this structure, I started laying granite fieldstones to form the outer walls.

For the oven base, I built a brick arch, using reclaimed bricks from an old farmhouse chimney. These bricks are handmade and approximately 100 years old. I used a lime-cement mortar and worked slowly, laying the stones layer by layer to allow proper drying.

On top of the oven base, I placed a separately cast concrete slab. The oven floor is made from firebricks, and the oven itself is two-layered, built using natural clay from my own forest mixed with construction sand. The second layer is insulated with wood shavings.

The grill and table were built using the same techniques and materials, creating a unified outdoor kitchen area.
