Ahead of the results of the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026, the political atmosphere in the state has intensified significantly. War of words and sharp political statements have escalated as parties target each other. In this context, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh launched a strong attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, calling her the “Donald Trump of India.” He alleged that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) could go to any extent during vote counting.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has taken a major step by ordering re-polling at all 285 polling stations in the Falta Assembly Constituency in South 24 Parganas district. The decision follows reports of serious electoral malpractices and violations during polling on April 29. Fresh voting will now take place on May 21 from 7 AM to 6 PM, while counting is scheduled for May 24.
TMC leader Jahangir Khan is contesting from the Falta seat. The re-poll order has further intensified the clash between BJP and TMC. BJP leader Amit Malviya criticized the “Diamond Harbour model” on social media, suggesting it has collapsed. Responding sharply, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee challenged the BJP to bring its “godfather” from Delhi to contest the seat.
Tensions were also visible on the ground after polling. Local residents staged protests demanding better security and fresh elections. In Hasimnagar village, a large number of protesters, including women carrying BJP flags, blocked roads. To control the situation, personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force were deployed in large numbers and assured residents of adequate safety measures.
A key highlight of this election has been the record voter turnout. The two-phase polling held on April 23 and 29 recorded an average turnout of nearly 93 percent—the highest since India’s independence. Previously, the highest turnout was recorded in Tripura in 2013 at 91.82 percent. In West Bengal, the 2011 elections also saw high participation, marking the end of 34 years of Left rule and the rise of the TMC government under Mamata Banerjee.
All eyes are now on the counting day scheduled for May 4. Most exit polls have predicted the end of TMC’s 15-year rule, indicating a possible shift in power that could significantly reshape the political landscape of the state.
