Wahrscheinlich gibt es zurzeit keinen Musiker, der so sehr interdisziplinär arbeitet wie Christopher Dell.

1965 in Darmstadt geboren, studierte Dell erst Philosophie, bevor er ein Vibraphon-Studium im holländischen Hilversum und Rotterdam absolvierte, welches er an der Jazz-Kaderschmiede, dem Berklee College Of Music in Boston abschloss. Zudem ließ er sich von Hans-Ulrich Engelmann in Komposition unterrichten und belegte Meisterklassen bei Neutönern wie Karlheinz Stockhausen und Wolfgang Rihm.
Seit 2002 leitet Dell das Institut für Improvisationstechnologie, hat im gleichen Jahr sein Buch Prinzip Improvisation veröffentlicht, und setzt sich theoretisch mit Städtebau und Architektur auseinander.

Nach Promotion und Habilitation hielt er unter anderem Professuren für Städtebau in Hamburg und München, sein Forschungsinteresse gilt Praxis und Organisationsverläufen der zeitgenössischen Stadt.

2022 wurde Dell mit den Hessischen Jazzpreis ausgezeichnet, zudem ist er Auslandsstipendiat für Architektur der Kulturstiftung des Bundes und der Länder an der Cité Internationale de Paris.

In seinem Projekt Das arbeitende Konzert führt Dell seine vielen musikalisch-kompositorischen, ästhetischen und forschenden Interessen zusammen. Sein Konzert versteht sich dabei als diskursives Aufführungsformat, bei dem ein variabel besetztes Ensemble die verschiedenen, komponierten Module flexibel handhabt. Das improvisatorische Moment bezieht sich also nicht nur auf eine musikalische Praxis, sondern zeigt sich auch als spezifische Haltung gegenüber dem Material.

There is probably currently no musician who works as interdisciplinary as Christopher Dell.

Born in Darmstadt in 1965, Dell first studied philosophy before going on to study vibraphone in Hilversum, Holland, and Rotterdam, which he completed at the jazz elite school, Berklee College Of Music in Boston. He also studied composition with Hans-Ulrich Engelmann and took master classes with neutones such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Wolfgang Rihm.
Since 2002, Dell has directed the Institute for Improvisation Technology, published his book Prinzip Improvisation in the same year, and theoretically explores urban planning and architecture.

After receiving his doctorate and post-doctorate, he held professorships in urban planning in Hamburg and Munich, among other places, and his research interests include the practice and organizational processes of the contemporary city.

In 2022 Dell was awarded the Hessian Jazz Prize, and he is also a foreign scholarship holder for architecture from the German Federal and State Cultural Foundation at the Cité Internationale de Paris.

In his project The Working Concert Dell brings together his many musical-compositional, aesthetic, and research interests. His concert is conceived as a discursive performance format in which a variable ensemble flexibly handles the various, composed modules. The improvisatory moment thus not only refers to a musical practice, but also shows itself as a specific attitude towards the material.
