Master Sergeant Ernest R. Kouma is one of the most remarkable armored warfare heroes in U.S. military history and a recipient of the Medal of Honor.
During the Korean War, Kouma commanded an M26 Pershing tank in a critical defensive action along the Naktong River. While wounded, he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to man his tank’s .50-caliber machine gun, inflicting heavy casualties on attacking forces and helping delay an enemy breakthrough. Official accounts credit his actions with killing an estimated hundreds of enemy soldiers and allowing friendly units to withdraw and reestablish defensive positions.
This Hero Spotlight episode examines the documented events that led to Kouma’s Medal of Honor, the tactical importance of his stand, and why his actions remain one of the clearest examples of armored combat leadership under extreme conditions.
All information presented in this video is based on publicly available historical records and official U.S. military documentation. No speculation or dramatization is included.
