Описание: Shreyas Royal wants to be Britain's youngest ever chess Grandmaster.

Shreyas’ dad, Jitendra, introduced him to chess when he was six years old. Three years later, Shreyas had become the world’s youngest Candidate Master, and was ranked fourth best chess player in the world for his age. However, also at this time, Shreyas and his family were being told they were no longer welcome in the UK.

When Shreyas’ family moved to London from South India in 2012, they were staying under a work permit which had now run out. Leaving the country would be a huge upheaval for Shreyas and his family and detrimental to Shreyas' chess career. After a long and public visa battle, and an exceptional performance by Shreyas in the British Championship Major Open in 2018, which saw him shoot up to number two in the world for his age, the then Home Secretary Sajid Javid made a personal decision to allow Shreyas and his family to stay in the UK.

Shreyas, now 15 years old, is set on his goal – to beat David Howell’s record and become the youngest British Grandmaster. To do this, Shreyas needs three Grandmaster “norms" which he can only achieve through outstanding performances in tournaments against players of the highest level. Shreyas has just under a year to beat a record that hasn't been broken in 17 years.
