IIT Delhi students are protesting over the death of MSc Physics student Rishikesh Kumar, who died after falling from the sixth floor of the institute’s Lecture Hall Complex on August 22.

Kumar’s family has accused IIT Delhi authorities of failing to act despite being alerted to his distress and alleged that he was denied adequate support, including accommodation and assistance with his academic project.

Protesting students have demanded the resignation of senior officials, ₹1 crore compensation for Kumar’s family and protection from disciplinary action for students involved in the protest.

Following the protests, IIT Delhi has announced an external inquiry into Kumar’s death. The committee will examine all aspects of the case and submit its report within two weeks.

The institute has also announced financial assistance for Kumar’s family and reimbursement of medical expenses. However, it has not addressed the students’ demand for the resignation of the Dean, Associate Deans and Head of the Physics Department.

The external inquiry is expected to examine the sequence of events and the institute’s response before Kumar’s death.
