Iran has 2,600 kilometers of coastline along the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, including the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz – a narrow passage through which 20% of the world's oil passes. But despite this strategic location, Iran has no major coastal cities. Bandar Abbas, the largest, barely reaches 500,000 people. Meanwhile, landlocked Tehran has 9 million.
So why is the coast – and the strait – so empty?
🌡️ 50°C heat + extreme humidity – unlivable before air conditioning.
💧 Qanats – 3,000-year-old underground water channels that made the central plateau livable.
⛰️ Zagros Mountains – cut the coast off from trade, culture, and power.
🏜️ Deserts – the Lut Desert and Dasht-e Kavir are also empty.
Iran's empty coastline isn't an accident. It's climate, geography, ancient engineering, and 3,000 years of civilization choosing the plateau over the sea.
