"Is China eating our lunch on nuclear?" asks Varun Sivaram, director of CFR’s Climate Realism Initiative, as he and Rush Doshi, director of CFR’s China Strategy Initiative, discuss China’s rapid expansion of its nuclear energy sector.
Doshi notes that while U.S. scientists developed the technology behind fourth-generation nuclear reactors—widely considered the safest and most advanced design—the United States has failed to scale up production. Meanwhile, China has invested heavily in deploying the technology and plans to build up to 100 nuclear reactors over the next 20 years.
Doshi warns that if the United States remains stagnant, China’s per-capita energy production could soon surpass that of the United States, a shift that could have sweeping consequences for industrial competitiveness, artificial intelligence, and national security.
