In this special episode of Caravan Baatcheet, host Vishnu Sharma speaks at length with senior journalist and The Caravan’s Consulting Editor, Sushant Singh, about his recent widely discussed report, “Naravane's Moment of Truth: An army chief’s unpublished memoir exposes how the Modi government spun the China border crisis.” The report is based on unpublished excerpts from former Army Chief General M.M. Naravane’s memoir, Four Stars of Destiny, which exposes the gaps in the government’s claims regarding the Ladakh crisis and the Agnipath scheme.

After the report was published, it caused a political storm when Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi raised the issue in Parliament, questioning the government’s strategic failures and accusing it of leaving the Army Chief to bear the consequences of critical decisions alone. In the discussion, Sushant Singh explains how, on the night of August 31, 2020, the political leadership in Delhi avoided taking responsibility and instead told the military leadership to “do what you think is appropriate,” effectively shifting the burden onto the Army. He also discusses why General Naravane viewed initiatives like the Agnipath scheme as a “shock” to the armed forces.
