1. SOUNDBITE (English) Jon Gambrell, The Associated Press:
"Iran has continued its attacks on oil infrastructure in its Gulf Arab neighbors. Today, we saw a drone attack target Ruwais, which is a petrochemical plant city that's in the far western reaches of the United Arab Emirates. And this comes as already we've seen authorities in Bahrain as well as Qatar announce force majeure, saying that they're unable to meet the contractual obligations for their production. We also heard from the CEO of Saudi Aramco, the kingdom's oil giant, who today said that they were trying to get up to maximum capacity in the East-West pipeline. That will take oil basically from the kingdom on the Persian Gulf all the way to the Red Sea so it can get out to the public a different way. But that maximum capacity of that pipeline is about seven million barrels a day, which is below what Saudi Arabia typically pumps. This is all part of this growing pressure on oil production that we're seeing because the Iranians have attacked ships around the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which about a fifth of all oil and natural gas passes. Because of this disruption, those big tankers can't get out and that's trapping in the production that's needed in this region for global energy demands. And the longer that this war goes on, the higher it's likely we're going to see prices at the pump, for people to heat their homes and for jet fuel that powers airplanes to fly around the world."

STORYLINE:
Iran has effectively stopped tankers from using the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman — the gateway to the Indian Ocean — through which 20% of the world's oil is carried.

Attacks on merchant ships near the strait have killed at least seven sailors, according to the International Maritime Organization.

A bulk carrier likely came under attack in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, with the captain reporting a splash and a loud bang nearby, according to a monitoring center run by the British military.

In a post on social media, U.S. President Donald Trump seemed not to acknowledge that, saying that “If Iran does anything that stops the flow of Oil within the Strait of Hormuz, they will be hit by the United States of America TWENTY TIMES HARDER than they have been hit thus far.”

Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard doubled down, saying in a statement that it “will not allow the export of even a single liter of oil from the region to the hostile side and its partners until further notice.”

Meanwhile, Amin Nasser, the president and CEO of Saudi Arabia’s oil giant Aramco, said tankers were being rerouted to avoid the Strait of Hormuz, and that its East-West pipeline would reach its full capacity of 7 million barrels a day being brought to the Red Sea port of the Yanbu this week.

"The longer that this war goes on, the higher it's likely we're going to see prices at the pump, for people to heat their homes and for jet fuel that powers airplanes to fly around the world," said the Associated Press' Jon Gambrell.

With the key shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz cut off, oil prices have surged — from less than $70 a barrel on Feb. 27 to a peak of nearly $120 early Monday before settling closer to $90.
