Nearly 100 middle school girls explore future STEM career possibilities at ACU event

Описание: On Saturday, Abilene Christian University hosted STEM for Girls, an annual event that allows middle school girls from across the Big Country to explore science, technology, engineering, and math. Each year, small groups of girls spend the morning rotating through 25-minute workshop stations. With nearly 100 participants roaming through the Halbert-Walling Research Center this year, program leaders counted the event as a complete success.

Dr. Jennifer Hennigan, associate professor of biology, confirmed that this year's event was packed with curious minds.

"We are excited to welcome almost 100 middle school girls from across the Big Country area to explore different disciplines in STEM," she said. "They come to ACU and go through 25-minute stations that showcase different areas of STEM."

Dr. Hennigan went on to detail the variety of workshop stations available.

"We have a nursing technology station and a nutrition station. There is an athletic training station and an environmental science station as well. We have agriculture biology, chemistry, and robotics stations. We also have an information technology station," Hennigan said. "We really like to give them a broad view of STEM. We hope to inspire them to be interested in STEM careers in the future."

The event has grown significantly over the years, but according to Dr. Hennigan, this year's turnout exceeded her expectations.

"This is probably our biggest year since 2020," she said. "We're excited to see growth. We are happy to see a rising interest, which is shown through the number of students signing up."
