3 Problems With Growing Tomatoes Using The Lower & Lean Method & What To Do Instead

Описание: Low & lean is great, but it isn't always the answer. I want to talk about three things that aren't so great about it or things that people can get wrong.

Let's start off talking about what it is. This method works well for pole or indeterminate tomatoes - or even other crops like cucumbers. That's because as your primary leader grows upward, it's going to produce fruit from old growth to new. It's all about growing UP instead of OUT.

Soon, the oldest parts of the plant will have been harvested, so you can trim off those branches and slide the whole stalk or coil it so you can still reach the fruit near the top. It just requires a simple trellis made up from a couple of t posts, a length of conduit, and a PVC tee at each end. Anyone can build this!

Here are some things to bear in mind if you're using this method:

1. WRONG CROP

The low and lean method isn't just for tomatoes. It's ideal for indeterminate or pole tomatoes. This is NOT the way to go for determinate tomatoes (which produce all at once) or even large fruits (like beefsteak) that might need more support.

2. HEIGHT

If you have a really fast-growing plant, this is going to be an issue almost no matter what. We're counting on the lowest branches being ready to get pruned when the leader reaches the top. Smaller varieties work well because the fruit will be ready to harvest more quickly.

3. WORK

This method - and indeterminate tomatoes in general - take a lot of maintenance. You need to be checking on your plants almost daily. This includes a lot of pruning and making sure the plant is getting the support it needs.
