"Cherry Red" is a song written in 1966 by Barry Gibb and recorded by the Bee Gees. It was first released as the B-side to the Australian single "I Want Home" in 1966; and then as an independent single, in 1970, in Brazil, without reaching the charts in any of the countries.
history and recording
The song was recorded in February 1966. It was the first (along with "I Want Home") to be recorded at Leedon Records with the new four-track recording equipment[1]. Despite this, it was the last track still recorded on the label, as, shortly after this single, the Bee Gees moved to the Spin Records label (like Leedon, also from Festival Records), where they recorded the subsequent album, Spicks and Specks. .
The song is still worth mentioning as the album The Bee Gees Sing and Play 14 Barry Gibb Songs featured the group as "Barry Gibb and the Bee Gees", as well as several other previous singles. "I Want Home"/"Cherry Red" returned to the original name: "Bee Gees", which was not changed from now on.
In March 1966, "Cherry Red" was released, along with "I Want Home", as a single in Australia, without success. Promotional material asked radio stations to play both sides of the single[1], but "I Want Home" is generally considered the A-side, as it has a smaller matrix serial number. "Cherry Red" was only released as an A-side in Brazil, in 1970, with the song "Take Hold of That Star", from 1963, as a B-side, which, in Australia, had been the B-side of "Timber!". In neither country did "Cherry Red" chart.
In Australia, "Cherry Red" was only released as an album on the LP Turn Around, Look at Us, from 1967. In Brazil, only on the compilation Autografos de Sucessos, from 1971.
Structure
The song has a solo by Barry Gibb, but is supported throughout by backing vocals by Robin and Maurice Gibb. It consists of: a short a cappella introduction; of two stanzas; the chorus ("I wonder why / the stars at night / shine big and bright / for me (...)"); again the first stanza ("Cherry red, / sweeter than a honeycomb (...)"); an instrumental interlude on Farfisa organ; once again the chorus; and, for the last time, the first verse fades out. The key is E major.
