Also known as Bogadh Faoi Shúsa, Bugga Fee Hoosa, The Kid on the Mountain is a slip jig in 9/8 time, best known today in a five‑part setting that weaves between G ionian and aeolian to create a moody, “journeying” feel up and down the scale. It is a popular session tune but more challenging than many others, both because of its length and because the rhythmic accents fall in less predictable places than in simpler slip jigs, so players often spend extra time internalizing its lilt and phrasing before bringing it up to full speed. The melody alternates darker, tense E‑minor sections with brighter G‑major passages that feel like brief clearings in the tune’s otherwise mysterious atmosphere, giving it a built‑in sense of contrast and call‑and‑response across the parts.
John Rough, the banjo player, taught me this session tune back in the late 1980s. I've been playing it regularly since 1989.
