Buninyong is a town 11 km (6.8 mi) from Ballarat, 120 km (74.5 mi) NW of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. The town is on the Midland Highway.
Buninyong was proclaimed a town on 27 June 1851.
Gold was reported "within a 1 or 3 km of the township of Buninyong" on 12 August 1851. Gold had been reported earlier at Clunes on 25 July 1851, the major gold rush to the Ballarat region had begun.
The name originates from an Aboriginal word also recorded as 'Buninyouang', said to mean 'man lying on his back with his knees raised', which is in reference to the shape of Mount Buninyong.
A blacksmith and wheelwright’s shop were opened in the 1840s and its proprietor, Thomas Hiscock, was to have a profound effect on the district. Hiscock, hearing of a reward for gold discovery in Victoria, prospected in several gullies around the Buninyong hamlet, finding it on 8 August 1851. A rush took place and, although the Buninyong find was patchy, the miners discovered the rich Ballarat field at Golden Point within a short time.
Extensive gold mining was delayed until 1857 when the Buninyong Gold Mining Company began operations on 57 hectares of the Learmonth’s Boninyong property.
This railway line was opened on Sep 12 1889 - The passenger service on the railway line ended in 1931 and the goods service on 28 Feb 1947.
The Buninyong Botanic Gardens at Buninyong are among the oldest Botanic Gardens in the State of Victoria.
