Recorded for possible inclusion on the Sign O' The Times album, Crucial was initially tracked by Prince on the 13th of September, 1986 with it being worked on for several months. Eric was asked to record a saxaphone part in November of the same year, with Prince using it as a guide for the guitar solo he would later replace the sax with, which would be released in 1997 on the "Crystal Ball" album.
The version of the track presented here has been restored through the use of the original leaked low quality Sax mix, the vocal take present on the 1997 release version and AI to enhance the instruments to high quality.
