Foreign ministers from China, India, and Russia met in New Delhi on Monday for the latest round of trilateral talks, only a few days after Beijing expressed “dissatisfaction and opposition” over the intrusion by an Indian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) into China’s territory at the border area neighboring Sikkim. What’s behind this latest border incident? How is this different from previous China-India border disputes, and how can the two countries prevent future skirmishes?
A legislator from Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party led by Tsai Ing-wen proposed an amendment to Taiwan region’s criminal code that says any Taiwan resident who joins the Communist Party can be charged with treason. The proposal passed its first reading and will proceed to the next phase, where it could be approved, given that the DPP holds the majority. Can this threatening proposal be stopped? How would this amendment affect the already highly sensitive cross-Strait relations?
