Описание: Himanshu Prabha Ray is an author and historian affiliated with the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies. Her recent books include Coastal Shrines and Transnational Maritime Networks Across India and Southeast Asia, Archaeology and Buddhism in South Asia, and The Return of the Buddha: Ancient Symbols for a New Nation.

John Guy is the senior curator of the Arts of South and Southeast Asia at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and of the Society of Antiquaries, London. Formerly curator of Indian Art at the V&A Museum London, he has curated numerous international art exhibitions and published widely, including ‘Woven Cargoes’ (1997), ‘Indian Temple Sculpture’ (2007), ‘Interwoven Globe’ (2013), ‘Lost Kingdoms: Hindu-Buddhist Sculpture of Early Southeast Asia’ (2014) and ‘Art & Independence: Y.G. Srimati and the Indian Style’ (2019).

William Dalrymple is the bestselling author of In Xanadu, City of Djinns, From the Holy Mountain, Age of Kali, White Mughals, The Last Mughal, Nine Lives, Return of a King, and Kohinoor. He has won many awards, including the Wolfson Prize for History, the Hemingway, the Kapuscinski, the Thomas Cook, and the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize. He has also been awarded the Arthur Ross Bronze Medal of the US Council on Foreign Relations and the prestigious President's Medal by the British Academy. His most recent books are The Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India Company and Forgotten Masters: Indian Painting for the East India Company. Dalrymple is one of the founders and a co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival.

In this #JaipurLiteratureFestival2021 session, academic and author Himanshu Prabha Ray, senior curator for the Metropolitan Museum of Art John Guy, and Jaipur Literature Festival Co-director and author William Dalrymple explore the spiritual and archaeological path of the expansion of Buddhism, opening a fascinating window into its foundations, histories, and traditions.

This session titled ‘The Spread of Buddhism’ also gives a keen insight into the role of patronage and of Buddhist monks in spreading its ideas and philosophy.
