Julia Florida is one of the most delicate and poetic compositions by the great Paraguayan guitarist and composer Agustín Barrios Mangoré. Written in December 1938 during his stay in Costa Rica, the piece dates from a difficult period in Barrios’s life, marked by health problems and economic hardship.

The work was dedicated to Julia Martínez, niece of Francisco Salazar and a student of Barrios himself. The title Julia Florida comes from the affectionate nickname given to her by the family: florida (“blossomed”), referring to her rapid adolescence, when she seemed to bloom like a spring flower.

In this performance, I sought to convey the intimate, melancholic sweetness of this masterpiece — a piece that continues to deeply move guitarists and listeners around the world.
