The patchy dirt spot in front of my deck just wouldn't grow grass, so I gave up trying and turned it into something better. Inspired by a recent trip to Japan and the peaceful beauty of their Zen gardens, I transformed this dead space into a Japanese-inspired rock garden that now doubles as a cozy patio.
This video shows the process, from outlining the design with string, digging out the base, and laying weed mat and edging to carefully placing river rocks and anchoring the layout with "mountain" stones for a calming, balanced vibe.
