Supreme Court Orders Pennaiyar Water Dispute Tribunal | Tamil Nadu vs Karnataka River Water Row

Описание: The Supreme Court of India has directed the Central Government to constitute a Water Disputes Tribunal within one month to resolve the long-standing Pennaiyar river water sharing dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Disposing of Tamil Nadu’s original suit filed in 2018, the Court held that there was no justification for further delay in setting up a specialised adjudicatory mechanism under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956.
Tamil Nadu has alleged that Karnataka’s upstream projects and check dams have reduced downstream water flow, adversely affecting farmers and water availability, while Karnataka has contested the claims and asserted its right to utilise river waters within its territory.
The tribunal will examine issues relating to the utilisation, control and distribution of Pennaiyar river waters between the two States.
