Post Independence Reminiscence of an Indian Senior Citizen
India Post Independence Reminiscence and Political Thoughts I talk to you Letter 16
I talk to you is Manak Chand Sanghi Bangalore Karnataka State. The most important event happened in my life is a TV serial on Ramayana televised on Doordarshan from 25th January 1987 to 31st July 1988. This is a highly successful and phenomenally popular Indian Epic television serial created, written and directed by Shri Ramanand Sagar. This is an adaptation of the ancient Indian Hindu religious epic of Ramayana and primarily based on Valmiki’s Ramayana and Tulsidas Ramcharitmanas. The episodes were broadcast on Doordarshan prime time of 9.30 am on every Sunday morning
Ramayana was enormously popular, drawing over 100 million viewers. Its popularity reached a point where the entire nation of India came to a virtual halt as nearly everyone stops to watch the televised adventures of Rama. The Ramayana fever spread so that religious services (Hindu and non-Hindu) were rescheduled to accommodate the show’s broadcast: trains, buses and inner city trucks stopped running to accommodate when the show was on and in villages hundreds of people would gather around a single television set to watch the show.
This T.V. serial was broadcast during Shri Rajiv Gandhi tenure of prime-ministership. Shri Rajiv Gandhi stated “Ramayana has stirred the imagination of millions of viewers. It has imbibed the great Indian culture, tradition and normal values especially in the young.”
Ramayan was the first Indian television series based on religious stories. This has widely inspired the production of many other religious stories notably B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharata, Vishwamitra, Buddha, Lav Kush and Krishna. This has also inspired historical dramas such as Chanakya and Shyam Benegal’s Bharat Ek Khoj. The popularity of T.V. serial Ramayan has grown so much that it has become the most popular series in the history of Indian Television.
In my view, Ramayan has all colours of life which, you may find in you and our society. You may draw solutions to your life’s problems and can solve it amicably. This not only keeps order/Dharma in our society but inspires to do good things and draws to update moral values in our life, in all I say that Ramayan is full of life. At the end I tell to you that you must read/listen Ramayan.
I request you to hear/listen this brief story of Ramayan which may enchant you in your life. Dasharatha was the king of Ayodhya. He had three queens, Kausalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra. He was childless for a long time and anxious to make an heir. He performed a fire-sacrifice known as putra-kameshtiyagya. On account of this, Kausalya gave birth to Lord Rama who was the seventh Avatar of Vishnu. Lord Rama is the eldest son of the king of Ayodhya, Dasharatha and his queen Kausalya. Lakshmana is the younger brother of Rama who chose to go into exile with Ram. Lakshmana and Shatrughna are born to Sumitra and Bharat is born to Kaikeyi. Please note that Bhagwan Vishnu (Rama) born into mortality to combat the Demon Ravana who was oppressing the gods. He could only be destroyed by a mortal. When Rama was 16 years-old, the Sage Vishwamitra comes to the court of Dasharatha in search of help against demons who were disturbing sacrificial rites. Vishwamitra chooses Rama, Lakshmana. They had received supernatural weapons from Vishwamitra to destroy the demons. Lakshmana is the younger brother of Rama who chose to go into exile with him. Lakshmana is as an avatar of the Shesha, the naga associated with the God Vishnu.
