How did an animal resembling Timon from Disney’s “The Lion King” end up on a Taiwanese roadside? Chiayi residents saw a lone meerkat near National Chung Cheng University in Minxiong Township. However, the animal quickly disappeared. Chiayi’s Livestock Disease Control Center immediately dispatched staff to catch it, but their efforts were in vain.

Our office has dispatched personnel to capture it, but we have not found any trace of the meerkat. Although meerkats are not listed as prohibited animals to keep, owners should not allow them to roam freely, let alone abandon their pets. If an owner abandons a pet, a fine of up to NT$150,000 may be imposed. We therefore urge pet owners to properly manage their animals to avoid unnecessary disputes in the future.

Not long ago, five meerkats were spotted in the Dadu Plateau in Taichung. Now, one has appeared in Minxiong, Chiayi County, which has raised concerns among ecological experts. They worry a serious invasive species crisis may break out, similar to Taiwan’s infestation of green iguanas.
